AI Design Assistant Robot

The AIDA (AI Design Assistant) robot platform was developed by J2 Holding for work commissioned by RISE and was subsequently used as the basis for a student project at Linköping University.

The platform consists of a robot arm with six servo motors connected to a Raspberry Pi. An Android tablet is attached to the robot arm and provides the user interface.

The tablet communicates with the Raspberry Pi using BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). Python software on the Raspberry Pi controls the servos through the serial interface ttyS0.

Students at Linköping University subsequently used the platform for a bachelor project in software engineering. Their work added object recognition, object tracking and speech recognition. The resulting system could classify objects, track and follow them using the robot arm, and respond to spoken commands.

A number of example commands were implemented in an Android application. One demonstration uses a button to command the servos to retract the tablet.

The development of the underlying robot platform was outsourced by RISE.
