Electronic Tongue for Water Quality Monitoring

J2 Holding developed and manufactured electronics and parts of the measurement probes for an electronic-tongue system used for rapid monitoring of drinking-water quality.
The underlying measurement principle was developed at Linköping University. The system was designed to detect small concentrations of contaminants, including sewage water, as well as other deviations in water quality.
J2 Holding was contracted to develop and build the electronic circuit boards used in the system, together with parts of the measurement probes.
The resulting sensor system was intended for near real-time monitoring of drinking-water distribution networks, allowing contamination and other changes in water quality to be detected within seconds or minutes.
The technology was subsequently commercialised through sense2bits AB, and systems were installed at a number of water-treatment and pumping facilities.
Project background
sense2bits AB was formed as a spin-off around the technology. The company is no longer operating; it was dissolved through a merger in 2026.
