Printed Sensor and Display Platform

J2 Holding developed the electronics design, printed conductor layout, display layout and firmware for a thin sensor demonstrator produced using printed electronics.

Printed sensor and display platform

The demonstrator was developed together with RISE/Acreo and Printed Electronics Arena (PEA) to demonstrate the integration of sensor electronics and a display on a thin printed substrate.

A liquid sample was applied to one of the carbon electrode areas. The resulting electrical signal was measured by the electronics, processed by a microcontroller and converted to a scaled value that could be presented directly on the integrated display.

A glucose sensor was used as the demonstrator application, while the electronics and printed platform provided a basis for evaluating similar electrochemical sensor concepts.

J2 development work

J2 Holding developed the circuit schematic and firmware and designed the silver and carbon patterns forming the electrical interconnections and sensor contact areas on the substrate.

J2 Holding also designed the layer patterns forming the integrated display. PEA subsequently manufactured the demonstrators by printing the conductor, electrode and display structures onto the substrate.

The project required the electronic design to be adapted to the possibilities and limitations of printed manufacturing, rather than using a conventional PCB and separate display.
