J2 Holding developed the electronics design, conductive silver-track layout and firmware for a thin temperature-logging label developed in collaboration with RISE/Acreo and MSF.

The self-adhesive label was designed to monitor the temperature history of temperature-sensitive products such as pharmaceuticals. Rather than simply detecting whether a temperature limit had been exceeded, the electronics could take both temperature and exposure time into account.

An integrated display provided a direct visual indication of the condition of the monitored product. Early versions indicated different states in response to the recorded temperature history.

J2 development work

J2 Holding was responsible for the electronic circuit design and firmware, as well as the physical layout of the conductive silver tracks printed on the substrate that formed the circuit board.

The layout work also included the NFC antenna coil and its resonant circuit. This required combining the electrical design with the mechanical and manufacturing constraints of the thin, printed substrate.

NFC functionality

Later versions incorporated NFC, allowing the logger to be programmed and recorded data to be downloaded using a standard NFC-enabled smartphone.
